Stay Cool with Fido at a Pet Friendly Hotel in Kelowna

Kelowna Pet Friendly Hotel

Visiting a hotel in Kelowna this summer? Protect your pet from the heat with these helpful tips.

With an expected hotter-than-average-summer in the Okanagan, Kelowna is seeing more sun-loving guests than normal. This growing guest list includes quite a few beloved pets too. If your time in the valley includes a stay at one of the dog friendly hotels in the Okanagan, we’ve compiled a couple of tips to help you keep Fido cool when the summer heat is going strong.

1. Hydrate!

Dogs need just as much fluids as you do, especially during the hottest months of the year. If you and your furry companion plan on spending a lot of time outdoors, pack along a portable water dish and full water bottle. The fresher the water, the better it is for your pup. Try to avoid letting them drink stagnant water, as that can cause more problems in the long run.

2. Plan Your Day Accordingly

If you plan on taking your little companion for a walk or a hike, try to go early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler. There’s also more available shade during these times.

You can even take a peek at the forecast before planning your day. If it’s going to be another scorcher, it may be best to skip the strenuous hike and opt for a day indoors instead.

If you do have to go out, never leave them alone in the car. A car sitting in the sun will heat up faster than an oven, and this can become an extremely dangerous environment really quickly.

3. Do a Little Pampering

If your pup is prone to shedding, help them out by giving them a good brushing before heading outdoors. By removing excess hair from their fur, you can help keep them cooler. Plus, it’s a great way to bond with your adventure-loving pooch and help keep him calm in his new digs at one of the hotels in Kelowna.

4. Avoid Hot Pavement

When the summer sun beats down, pavement can reach high temperatures too. Try to avoid walking your dog on pavement when the sun is at its strongest. Instead, look for dirt paths, grassy fields, or pet beaches right on the lake. These areas are much easier on your pup’s pads, and many of them are even located close to Kelowna pet friendly hotels.

5. Go For a Swim

Kelowna is home to so many pet-friendly beaches. In fact, it’s one of the pet-friendliest places in B.C. For a list of some of our favourite dog beaches and activities, check out our previous post: Fido-Approved Activities Near Kelowna Hotels.
