Hotels in Kelowna Charged up for E-mazing Race

June 04, 2015

Hotels in Kelowna EV Charging Stations

Electric vehicle owners are taking to the roadways as part the 2015 E-Mazing Race, and one of the hotels in Kelowna will be helping them fuel up with their four EV charging stations.

Start anywhere. End anywhere—that’s the approach organizers are adopting for the 2015 E-Mazing Race (EMR), which started May 27 in Halifax. This electric vehicle (EV) rally is an environmentally conscious event with an emphasis on fun and interactivity, and one of the more innovative hotels in Kelowna is happy to offer a pit stop along the way.

BEST WESTERN PLUS Kelowna Hotel & Suites recently added their fourth EV charging station—the most of any hotels in the city—and is well equipped to handle an influx of EV traffic. Each of the four 90-volt charging stations, the first of which was installed in 2012, can take an electric car from ‘empty’ to full in less than two hours.

While the EMR officially launched at the Halifax Port Authority in late May, anybody with an EV can start the race at any point in North America. The launch coincided with Electric Mobility Canada’s EV2015VÉ conference and is meant to:

  • Raise awareness for sustainable transportation
  • Promote eco-tourism
  • Expand EV infrastructure
  • Encourage EV adoption

Racers plan their own travel and collect points using a smartphone with the SCH Navigator App (available on Apple or Android). Points are registered by checking in with a photo at as many Sun Country Highway charging stations as possible to receive points. There is a limit of one check-in allowed per charger, so the race is on to place in the top-10 on the EMR leaderboard. The race ends Wednesday, June 24.

There is more than $20,000 in prizes, rewards and discounts up for grabs in the 2015 EMR, with the top-three racers taking home incredible prizes such as:

  • Sun Country Highway EV Charger
  • Sun Country Highway Farms Birding Kit
  • Sound Solar Systems Solar Light

There’ll be additional awards for Best Picture and Most Points in a Low-Range EV (under 200km).

The charging service at Best Western Kelowna is complementary to all hotel guests and is part of its overall sustainability plan to become a ‘green hotel.’ With a growing numbers of EV owners in BC, this is quickly becoming a substantial environmentally friendly movement, and the Kelowna hotel has positioned itself at the forefront.

Being an environmental innovator is nothing new for the company. Since 2006, the BEST WESTERN PLUS Kelowna Hotel & Suites has won numerous awards and certifications, including:

  • National Energy & Environmental Award
  • BC Minister’s Award of Excellence for climate action
  • Carbon Neutral Certified
  • LEED silver certificate for building an environmental wing
  • 4 Green Key Global
  • 4 Green Key Meetings
  • Green Tourism Canada’s Gold designation
