Flying to Kelowna Pet Friendly Hotels with Your Fur Baby

Kelowna pet friendly hotel travels

Travelling by air to Kelowna pet friendly hotels will go a lot smoother if you do a little pre-planning.

Pet owners are a passionate lot. So much so that many bring their dogs with them wherever they go, including visits to Kelowna pet friendly hotels. While driving is the normal mode of transportation for getting around with Rex, many pet owners are taking to the air with their furry travel buddies.

But before you book yourself a ticket for your next excursion, there are a few points to consider that’ll help you determine whether air travel is practical (and permitted by the airline in question).

Canadian Airlines are Pet Friendly

Canada’s two major airlines—Air Canada and WestJet—permit cats and small dogs on in-cabin flights, with a number of restrictions:

  • The pet must be small enough to stay in its carrier under the seat in front of you
  • Your dog must weigh less than 10 kilograms (22 pounds)
  • Your pet in its carrier counts as one standard item towards your carry-on luggage allowance
  • If you require a medical device that needs to be stowed under your seat, you cannot bring a pet

And sorry, no pets are permitted in Premium Economy or International Business Class. Also, there is typically an additional $50 fee for domestic flights (each way), and $100 for international.

Is Your Pet Ready to Fly?

Of course, just because airlines allow pets doesn’t mean your particular pet is cut out for travel at 40,000 feet. Flying can be an uncomfortable experience for humans—and we even know what’s going on—let alone for unsuspecting cats and dogs.

You know your pet best, and should have a pretty good idea of how they’ll handle the rigours of air travel. There are a few tricks that can help smooth the process:

Before you go:

  1. If you don’t already have one, find a suitable pet carrier and make sure Buddy is comfortable being in it.
  2. The carrier will need to fit in the space under an airline seat. They can be up to 19 inches long, 10 inches high and 12 inches wide, but check with your chosen airline to confirm.
  3. You’ll also need to make an appointment with your vet to obtain a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection, showing his or her vaccinations are current.
  4. If you’re flying internationally to one of the Kelowna pet friendly hotels in the area, research pet importation regulations.

On the day:

  1. Restrict food and water intake (unless you’re flying that night) to reduce the possibility of accidents
  2. Go for a walk to burn off any excess energy
  3. Go through your pet packing checklist (collars, leashes, chew toys, poo bags, etc)
  4. Constantly praise and comfort your pet at the airport and on the plane
