Ahead of France, ahead of Spain, ahead, even, of Napa, California. The Okanagan Valley was recently named the top wine destination in the world and our Best Western Kelowna Hotel's staff are celebrating!

Viator's article on the Top 10 Wine Destinations Around the World notes that more and more oenophiles are heading to atypical wine country destinations, including South Africa, Australia, and, yes, Canada.

The number one wine destination is our very own Okanagan Valley.

According to the story, “Okanagan wines are truly exceptional, and Penticton is an excellent place to start a tasting tour of the more than 100 wineries in the region.”

Others in the top five include Bordeaux, France; Finger Lakes, New York; Mendoza, Argentina; and Willamette Valley, Oregon.

For those of you who haven’t been on an Okanagan wine trip, we thought we’d share a little more about why the valley is one of the best places for a wine vacation.

Why the Okanagan Valley is the Top Wine Destination in the World

Nearly 200 wineries. You could spend weeks exploring wineries across the valley, from the edge of Osoyoos to the tip of Armstrong. Staying at centrally located Kelowna hotels and pairing yourself up with a wine tour package gives you quick and easy access to wine trails in each direction.

More than 60 varietals. This sun-soaked landscape is ideal for growing grapes of every shade, including all your favourites—Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay.

Award-winning wines. In addition to abundance, our wines are winning international awards. In 2013, Mission Hill in West Kelowna won the world’s best pinot noir under $25 category at the Decanter World Wine Awards in London, England.

And everything else. In addition to a horizon of vineyards, the Okanagan offers stunning lake views, beaches, mountains, golf and restaurants. Oh, and more wine—ice wine!
