Tree Brewing Institute Cheese Tasting

To try something a little different during your stay at Kelowna hotels, pay a visit to the Tree Brewing Institute or one of the area’s craft distilleries, cideries or meaderies.

The Okanagan has long been renowned for its ever-flourishing wine scene. People come from all over to venture out into the region’s vineyard-laden countryside to sample and procure some of the best varietals this country has to offer before returning to their Kelowna hotels to relax and unwind.

In amongst all the excitement surrounding those world-class wines, there are a number of distilleries, breweries, cideries and meaderies cropping up in the Kelowna area that are serving up some tasty new libations. Here are a few of the leaders in their respective fields:

The Lowdown on Distilleries

Okanagan Spirits: Based in Vernon, with a gorgeous new retail outlet/tasting room in downtown Kelowna, this internationally acclaimed craft distillery produces more than 25 varieties of liqueur, fruit brandy, absinthe, whisky and fruit-based spirits, all made from 100 per cent BC fruit.

Urban Distilleries: Another award-winning distillery based on the northern border of the downtown core, Urban Distillers’ signature line is called Spirit Bear, which features vodka, gin and for something a little different, infused vodka.

It’s Not Just a Brewery, It’s an Institute

Brewing small-batch beer since 1996, Tree Brewing has become a favourite among locals as well as those staying at Kelowna hotels. Their three year-round beers—Kelowna Pilsner, Thirsty Beaver Amber Ale and Cutthroat Westcoast Ale—are continually complimented by a rotation of seasonal offerings and limited releases.

Tree recently created its own beer institute (1346 Water Street) to share their knowledge and passion for craft beer through their “grain-to-glass” tours. You will likely want to book a taxi back to your Kelowna hotels.

A Different Way to Get Buzzed

Actually, mead is believed to be one of the oldest forms of alcohol consumed by man. Also known as honey wine, mead is basically a fermented honey liqueur, and Meadow Vista Honey Wines in southeast Kelowna makes some of the best this province has to offer.

Sipping Cider Made from Okanagan Fruit

East Kelowna Cider Co.: Enjoy a wagon ride as your tour through one of East Kelowna’s oldest family farms, learning about the production of cider as you go. With a tempting variety of hard and soft ciders made from apples, peaches and cherries, as well as other unique concoctions such as ice ciders and apple beer, there’s something to please almost every palate.

Double Cross Cidery: With family farming roots dating back to 1884, you could easily say Double Cross Cidery is born of a proud tradition. Their current lineup features a hard apple cider and four iced ciders.
