4 Things to Do Near Kelowna Hotels Downtown in February

While it might appear the City of Kelowna is a little sleepy early in the New Year, there are still plenty of things to do. Particularly if you’re staying at Kelowna hotels downtown, there are numerous events that are either within walking distance, or a short cab ride, from your room.

Even if you choose to stay at one of the Kelowna airport hotels in the area, getting around the city is straightforward. It’s definitely worth exploring if you have some free time on your hands.

2. Spring Lantern Festival

The Chinese Lantern Festival is a popular event that can easily be accessed by those staying at Kelowna hotels downtown.

When: Saturday, Feb. 6, 6-9 p.m.

2016 is the Year of the Monkey according to the Chinese zodiac. To celebrate this cultural event, the Okanagan Chinese Canadian Association is hosting its annual Spring Lantern Festival at the Laurel Packing House. The event includes:

3. Boundless – Presented by Ballet Kelowna

When: Friday, Feb. 5 and Saturday, Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m.

Ballet Kelowna's Boundless is a mixed repertory programme bursting with the themes of youth and love. Matjash Mrozewski, a former National Ballet of Canada dancer, has teamed up with Canadian composer Owen Belton to create this performance featuring several productions, including:

Glas: a work inspired by the relentless way a river flows

Studies of Cash: a tribute to country singer legend Johnny Cash

Romeo and Juliet: a fresh interpretation of Shakespeare’s two star-crossed lovers

4. Opera Kelowna – Lake of Tears

Set in the mystical world of the loon people, who have the ability to transform in to both human and bird form, this storyline depicts the fallout between two brothers that have fallen in love with the same woman. This Opera Kelowna production is composed by Imant Raminsh, and designed by Kelowna-based artist Jane Everett. It also features:

  • Orchestral instruments
  • Costumes
  • Handmade custom jewelry
