4 Great Kelowna Wine Events at the Spring Okanagan Wine Festival

April 12, 2016

Okanagan Wine Festivals

The Spring Okanagan Wine Festival is a fun, entertaining and informative way to get out and experience Kelowna wine.

Kelowna wine will take centre stage as the annual Spring Okanagan Wine Festival gets underway from April 28 to May 8 in the Central Okanagan. If you’ll be staying at one of the Kelowna hotels in the area, this is a terrific opportunity to get out and experience some of the tantalizing varietals this region has to offer.

Compared to Okanagan wine tours (which are a ton of fun in their own right), spring festival brings the area’s premier vintners and industry experts together in a series of signature events that are meant to:

  • Educate
  • Entertain
  • Inspire
  • Create camaraderie

Hosted by the Okanagan Wine Festivals Society, the spring festival features nearly 20 events dedicated to Kelowna wine alone. There are other things going on in:

  • Lake Country
  • West Kelowna
  • Naramata Bench
  • Okanagan Falls
  • Oliver
  • Osoyoos
  • Penticton
  • Similkameen
  • Summerland

Here are some of our top picks for Kelowna:

1. Spring WestJet Wine Tastings

Where: Rotary Centre for the Arts

When: Friday, April 29, 7 to 9:30 p.m.

Cost: $75

This is one of the top events of the entire festival. Hosted at the gorgeous Rotary Centre for the Arts, attendees will get to sample more than 250 wines from 60 wineries from across the Okanagan. The event features:

  • Appetizers from Nesters Market
  • Live music
  • Fun, social atmosphere

2. Lakeshore Wine Route Unleashed

Where: Various locations

When: Saturday, April 30, noon to 4 p.m.

Cost: $20 suggested donation

This is a must-do event for those staying at Kelowna pet friendly hotels. Kelowna's Lakeshore Wine Route and the SPCA are teaming up to throw a pooch-friendly party. While your pet enjoys some tasty treats, you can savour canapés that are perfectly paired with the Kelowna wine produced at each of these vineyards:

  • Cedar Creek
  • Summerhill
  • St. Hubertus
  • Tantalus

Those who make a $20 donation will receive a ‘Pawsport,’ which you can get stamped at each for a chance to enter for a grand prize draw. Wine purchases support the SPCA.

3. Iron Sommelier – British Columbia

Where: Okanagan College Centre for Learning

When: Saturday, May 7, 7 to 9:30 p.m.

Cost: $65

You’ve seen top chefs battle it out on reality TV. Now watch as a trio of BC wine experts are tasked with pairing wines with a series of gourmet dishes and cheeses. As an audience participation event, you get to cast your vote for your favourite sommelier (via text, so don’t forget your smartphone).

4. Mead 101

Where: Meadow Vista Honey Winery

When: Saturday, May 7, 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Cost: $35

Also known as ‘honey wine,’ mead is renowned as the world’s oldest fermented beverage, predating both wine and beer. This fun-filled event will teach you all about its remarkable history and how you can pair it with your favourite foods.
