As a Canadian, there is nothing better than winter sports. Whether that’s visiting the local arena and taking in some good old-fashioned hockey or heading up to a snow-covered ski hill to witness talented skiers take part in high-speed alpine ski competitions, living in Canada during the wintertime definitely has its perks.
Here are three events taking place this winter that will have you racing to your favourite hotel in Kelowna so you don’t miss any of the action:
Where: Big White Ski Resort
When: December 10 - 11, 2017
Do you like snow? High-speed cars? Then you’ll love the 9th Annual Big White Winter Rally. Watch as cars travelling at high speeds race around snow-covered roads while dodging trees, ice, and other debris. The top teams from across North America will be in attendance looking to take home the title of Canadian Rally and Cascadia International Rally Champions.
There are a few different ways you can enjoy all the rally action. You can visit the cars on display before the race begins, watch them get pieced back together at Service Park, or you can put on your toque and mitts and head out to one of the forest stages set up for yours and the rest of the rally fans’ viewing pleasure.
Where: Prospera Place
When: Different dates throughout the winter
Cost: $10-35 per ticket
If hockey is the one sport you can’t live without, you’ll definitely want to head over to Prospera Place and take in a Kelowna Rockets hockey game (or two). Watch as they take on the Oil Kings from the City of Champions or battle the Kamloops Blazers, one of their biggest rivals. No matter which game you happen to catch, you can be sure there will be no shortage of epic plays, fist-clenching goals, and lots of cheering.
Where: Big White Ski Hill
When: March 3, 2018
Cost: free for spectators, $20 for participants
For snow lovers with a passion for skiing and snowboarding, the Kelowna Cup at Big White is an event you won’t want to miss. Whether you prefer to be a spectator or a participant, this race caters to downhill racers of all skill levels. Competitors are timed on their first run. Once they get to the bottom, they need to predict the time it’ll take them to complete a second run. Whoever offers up the closest prediction wins.
This event also has prizes being awarded to the best-dressed participant, which will likely bring lots of interesting and funny costumes along with it.
