How to Tell if Kelowna Pet Friendly Hotels Are Truly Welcoming

June 10, 2015

Dog friendly vs dog tolerant hotels

Staying at a pet-friendly hotel Kelowna visitors use for their Okanagan explorations is a great starting point for your own adventures with your dog.

There’s a wave of travellers coming to the Okanagan seeking out pet friendly hotels in Kelowna to accommodate their four-legged companions. Having a place that accepts your dog is hugely beneficial for some vacationers. But just because a hotel says it’s ‘pet friendly’ doesn’t mean it’s really going to welcome your Rex.

In an entertaining travel article, B.L. Ochman and her 80-pound Labradoodle discovered The difference between hotels that are dog friendly—and just dog tolerant.

So, how do you determine whether a hotel will be truly accepting of your pooch, or if it’s simply advertising this service as a way to gain a wider market audience? Your best bet is to call the hotels you’re considering booking with to inquire about their specific policies regarding dogs.

Even a quick phone conversation will give you a sense of:

  • How receptive they are to pets
  • What services they offer
  • Whether there are extra fees involved
  • The type of room you can expect

What You Can Expect from a Pet Friendly Kelowna Hotel?

Depending on where you’re staying, you can expect an array of services and amenities that cater to canines, and even specific pet-friendly rooms available where there's laminate or tile flooring instead of carpet. You can find some hotels that offer such lavish treatments as in-house dog massages and designer dog bowls, while at the opposite end of the spectrum you’ll find ones that offer, well, nothing.

The standard for many hotels is to charge a per-night fee for your dog to stay with you, with possibly a discount for multiple pets. With that, you can expect to find:

  • Dog bowls
  • Poo bags
  • Pet sheets to cover linen and furniture
  • Outside areas where dog can do its business

Our Best Western Kelowna hotel offers all of these things for a small per night fee—and discounts for additional pets—plus your furry friend gets a doggy treat bag filled with toys and snacks!

Staying in a One-Horse Town

Not everywhere you travel is going to have a plethora of pet friendly hotels to choose from. In smaller centres, you might not even find one, so be sure to do your research before you pack Fido’s Doggles, favourite chew toys, and other belongings.

Fortunately, if you’re travelling to the Okanagan, there’s plenty of Kelowna pet friendly hotels available. In fact, Kelowna was recently named the pet-friendliest city in the country because we’re genuinely fond of furry tourists and residents. Be a Good Pet Ambassador

In order for the pet friendly hotel scheme to continue, it’ll require a little buy-in from dog owners. Here are some helpful suggestions to ensure you’re doing your part:

  • Check that hotel policy allows you to leave your dog alone in the room
  • Notify staff if you’re leaving your pet in the room unattended
  • Pick up after your dog
  • Don’t bring dogs that have behaviour issues, or aren’t properly trained or housebroken
