How One of the Hotels in Kelowna Is Giving Its Elevators a Style Makeover

Best Western Kelowna Hotel's Elevator Wrap

Introducing elevator art is one of the projects that’s earning Best Western recognition as one of the more innovative hotels in Kelowna.

Boring elevator rides are about to come to an end at one of the hotels in Kelowna. BEST WESTERN PLUS Kelowna Hotel & Suites is the first accommodation provider in the region to wrap its elevator doors and interiors with photography highlighting the local area.

“The elevators have always looked like blank real estate to me,” says Brenda Rayburn, Director of Sales & Marketing for the hotel. “I thought: ‘Why doesn’t anybody do pictures?’”

Rayburn first considered the idea when she noticed another hotel had put writing graphics on an elevator door. She simply took it a step further.

Choosing an Iconic Image

For her vision, Rayburn wanted something that would:

  • Appeal to guests
  • Attract their eye
  • Evoke an emotion
  • Promote the region

With so many beautiful landscapes in the area, the hard part was deciding which images to use. In the end, Rayburn settled on a winery theme for one of the hotel’s three elevators. Given the area’s involvement in that industry, it made sense.

The door’s exterior features a soft, muted photo of some barrels at Mission Hill Estate Winery. On the inside, guests are greeted by a stunning scenic shot of Cedar Creek Winery with Okanagan Lake in the backdrop. Images such as these might inspire guests to venture out on Okanagan wine tours in the area.

For the other lobby elevator, Rayburn wanted to highlight some of the lesser known attractions and activities in the area that can be enjoyed by visitors staying at hotels in Kelowna.

The outside of that door features a first-person view looking over a set of handlebars on a mountain bike. The interior shows a spectacular shot of a trestle along the Kettle Valley Railway by Myra Canyon.

That’s a Wrap

Once she knew the elevator project was going ahead, Rayburn needed to find someone capable of installing the images so that they would be:

  • Durable
  • Attractive
  • Commercial quality

She worked with Speedpro Signs Kelowna for the application. They used a film wrap similar to what you see on buses and other vehicles.

Brian Bonsma, owner of Speedpro Kelowna, explains the photos on the elevators’ interior are comprised of three panels. They made the images waist-height to create a window effect.

“It looks like you’re standing in a railing looking out through a window,” says Bonsma. “It was fun to do and we’re all pleased with the way it turned out. We were excited to be involved with it.”

Already Having an Effect

Rayburn says the elevator art is already making a big impression on guests. She notes one couple that, upon seeing the image of the Kettle Valley trestle, booked an extra night’s stay just so they could visit it.

“They’re all talking about it. Guests take pictures of it,” she says. “It’s about creating all of these emotions.

“It’s important that this is their home away from home. It’s something that says: ‘This is my place, this is my hotel.’”

Kelowna park beach access

Kelowna offers several parks and beaches for the more laid back guests.
