The only thing on your mind this time of year is probably vacation time, so having our super environmentally-friendly conscious Kelowna hotel try to add any extra info in there can potentially be a lost cause. Regardless, we’re still going to ask you try to make an extra effort to green your travels and green your mind a little more every day.
R-e-s-p-e-c-t Treat locals and their customs with courtesy on your next trip. Immerse yourself in the rich culture and history, you’re sure to learn something new and enjoy it. Admire but don’t disturb native plants and wildlife; flowers are pretty and animals are cute, but they are a look-don’t-touch. The City of Kelowna is overflowing with natural beauty and offers ways to experience it all safely with an abundance of eco-friendly activities and venues designed just for visitors.
Local talent Whenever possible, buy products that are locally made and are earth-friendly. Search out local farms, markets, wineries, studios and galleries that are owned and operated by some talented people who are all about sustainability.
Don’t be shy Ask restaurants if they use local, organic ingredients. It’s something to be proud of so any establishment that features a locally-inspired menu will be more than happy to tell you all about it. Bragging rights for sure! Not to mention the taste of fresh local products will be well worth the trip.
Let the sun shine in The best thing about summer is the sunshine, so turn off the lights! The cheapest and most energy-efficient light and heat source is readily available, especially in the Okanagan summer season. Turn off or unplug anything in your hotel room when you’re not using them, which will be a lot due to the fact you’ll be too busy exploring. (And it’s good practice to do the same at home before you leave for vacation!)
Between the sheets Most hotels in Kelowna and around the world should have the option nowadays, but take advantage of the linen reuse program. Seriously, do you wash your bedding at home daily?? Didn’t think so. Hotels that have linen reuse programs often experience a 50% drop in linen changes and almost as much in towel changes. That adds up to A LOT of saved water and energy in the laundry room.
Green is better than red Buy natural or organic sunscreen and apply it at least 30 minutes before you head out the door. Waiting to slather it on just before jumping in the water defeats the whole purpose and increases the potential lobster red sunburn! (The Best Western Kelowna hotel has a fantastic alternative: play in our indoor mineral pool without the worries of sunscreen OR chlorine.)
Is your mind greener yet?
This summer it’s all about vacation time and having fun, but it doesn’t hurt to do it in the most eco-friendly way you can. Happy (green) travels!
