Whether you’re visiting Kelowna during your summer holidays or have lived here all of your life, one of the must-dos when visiting the valley is touring some (or all) of the amazing wineries scattered around. Kelowna wine has become synonymous with some of the best wines in the world, including some of those coveted wines that made Napa Valley famous.
Before heading out to some of the vineyards you’ve heard about in passing, do a little pre-tour planning with these helpful hints.
One of the most important things you can do before heading out on your Kelowna wine tour is to map out the wineries you’d like to visit in advance. If you’re staying at Kelowna hotels near airport, stick to the Lake Country and Kelowna regions nearby to cut down travel time.
With nearly 200 different wineries located in the Okanagan valley, it’s important to pick a region to focus on. Some of the regions to consider include:
Now that you’ve narrowed down the region you want to visit, pick a couple of wineries in that region that appeal to you. The Trip Planner at WineBC.com can be a really helpful tool.
Many local wineries also have restaurants and bistros that offer wonderful food pairings that compliment their Kelowna wine. When planning your wine tour route, do some light research on which of the wineries you’ve selected feature menus that showcase some of the best fare in the Okanagan. Then plan to swing by that winery around lunchtime.
The other popular option for lunch during a wine tour is packing up a few of your favourite things in a picnic lunch. Many wineries and vineyards offer stunning sitting areas that overlook Okanagan Lake. They’re absolutely perfect for sipping on wine while indulging in your pre-packed picnic feast.
If you know you like white wine and have no desire to sample red varietals, you should try and keep an open mind while on tour. Winemakers all over the valley use different methods and ingredients to compose their award-winning wines. Just because you don’t like one type of wine from one winery, doesn’t mean you won’t appreciate another location’s rendition. Just remember that the whole point of tastings is to experience new blends and flavours.
If you plan on sipping the day away, you may want to hire a tour company or have one of your tour companions become a designated driver. If you’re heading out solo, consider the sip and spit. It may seem blasphemous to spit out good wine, but it’s a great way to experience the taste without compromising your ability to drive.
