There’s a fitness secret just waiting to be discovered on your next trip for travel or pleasure: the hotel swimming pool!
If you’ve never tried working out in the water, you’re missing out on
some tremendous health benefits and a new and fun way to burn fat.
Water has much to offer as a fitness tool. Because your body has to work
against water—it provides resistance for your muscles, which
strengthens them while boosting the cardio effects.
Water workouts also lessen the tension on your joints, reducing the
potential for injury than found in other types of cardio activities.
Here are 5 exercises that you can try on your next trip. Waist-high
water is ideal and, if you have them, wear water shoes that have a bit
of grip on the bottom.
Running against the current -
Run in a zig zag pattern across the pool. Turn around, then run back
straight through the currents you’ve created. Do this in three-minute
intervals, repeating 4-5 times.
Spiderman -
Facing the side of the pool, run your feet up the wall, then down
again. Return to standing position. Do it again, beginning with the
opposite foot. Tighten your stomach and core body muscles to maintain
balance. Repeat 8-10 times.
Pool Plank -
Holding a plank position builds your core muscles. Using a pool noodle
or other flotation device, stand with your feet together, body straight,
and push the noodle down into the water until your body is at least a
45 degree angle. Hold this position for 60 seconds, working on keeping
balance and having a tight stomach. Repeat 3-4 times.
Leg Lifts
- Standing with hands on your hips and feet together, lift one leg
straight in front of you as high as possible, tightening the leg muscle
and holding for 5 - 10 seconds before lowering your leg and then
alternating to the other side. Repeat 10 times each side.
Treading Water
- In the deep end of the pool, tread water for one minute. Work on
keeping your stomach muscles tight while you tread, as this is a great
workout for your abdominal muscles. Repeat 5 times, resting in between.
Doctors recommend water workouts for people who are recovering from surgeries, who have joint conditions or other circumstances that make higher impact workouts difficult.
Our pool at the Best Western Plus Kelowna is a mineral pool, which offers even more benefits for those who dive in to work out. The chemical-free waters are great for conditioning your skin and therapeutic for your body.
No matter what your fitness level, the next time you get the chance to splash around in a hotel pool while traveling for work or with family, consider giving these fun workouts a try.
