Travel Smart - Use Sun Protection

July 09, 2012 | by Christina Van

Remember to pack your sun protection items too!

Don't let the sunburn be your reminder to pack sunscreen next time.

Kelowna offers travelers some of the best outdoor activity options in British Columbia. Time spent on our beautiful beaches or hiking our magnificent mountains is all made possible by the gorgeous Okanagan sunshine that is often in no short supply.

However, vacation travel can cause you to become preoccupied with other trip details, making you forget about the most basic things—like simple sun protection. Here are some sun-smart tips, brought to you from the SickKids’ AboutKidsHealth Program.

The sun’s rays are strongest between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. Plan your vacation activities so that you are inside during these times.

If you are going to be exercising (like hiking up Knox Mountain or bike riding along the Mission Park Greenway), make sure to drink plenty of water before you begin. Don’t wait until you feel thirsty or start to sweat to drink; begin ahead of time. This goes for adults AND kids. Make kids drink water before going outside to play or swim.

Sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher should always be used—even if your kids are only going to be outside for a short time.  Children and babies can sunburn in as little as 20 minutes. Apply sunscreen liberally and on all exposed areas. Many people forget about the back of the neck and behind the ears. These are painful places to burn!  Re-apply sunscreen every 2 - 3 hours, especially if kids are playing outdoors or in the water.

Babies under 6 months old should avoid the sun. Period! If you want to take baby for a swim, an indoor pool—like the ones at our Kelowna hotel—is a much better option for infants than the hot outdoor beach. Sunscreens are not recommended as safe for babies.

Light colored, loose fitting clothing is a better choice than dark clothes if you or your kids will be in the sun. The dark colours absorb the heat, making you hotter than if you wear lighter clothes.

These tips from Sick Kids’ Hospital will help make not only your Kelowna vacation, but any vacation, sun-safe and more enjoyable.
