Kelowna is one of the top destinations in the province of B.C. This means that the tourism industry is big in the Okanagan, and Kelowna has grown to meet the demand for lodging and dining. This also means there are a lot of different lodging options available, including many Kelowna hotel and motels. If you’ve ever wondered what the difference between the two are, we’re here to break it down for you.
Originally, the term hotel was derived from a French word for ‘townhouse.’ It was established to describe a facility that offered lodging and meal service for out-of-town guests. Nearly a century later, the term motel was created. This term was created from a combination of motor and hotel. Motels were created for quick overnight stays and don’t typically offer the same amenities a hotel offers.
The designs between Kelowna hotel and motels are different too. While hotels are taller with more floors and even more rooms, motels are usually only one or two stories tall. In a hotel, the rooms are accessible via an internal hallway and multiple sets of stairs and elevators. In a motel, rooms are accessible right from the parking lot.
The staff in hotels and motels can vary quite a bit too. Hotels generally have more staff than motels. One person sitting at the front desk and a cleaning and maintenance crew usually run motels. On the other hand, hotels offer a more all-inclusive experience and tend to require more staff to meet these needs. From chefs to massage therapists, hotels require more able-bodied staff members for their day-to-day operations.
Most motels are known for their simple service. Some motels may even offer free breakfasts and access to a pool, but it’s not very common. At most Kelowna hotels, you’ll not only find these services but many others too, like room service, spa services, and concierge services.
Most Kelowna accommodations, whether they are a hotel or a motel, strive to offer up a decent location for the benefit of their guests. However, hotels often take more pride in their location and sometimes use it for advertising purposes. The locations of motels are usually more convenient. They’re more likely to be found on the side of a highway or at a main intersection.
If you’re travelling with little ones in tow, Kelowna hotel suites might be preferable to a motel room. Since suites offer mini kitchens and an extra bedroom, both you and your toddler will have a much more pleasant stay. Staying at Kelowna hotels with indoor pools is another great way to keep your travelling tot happy.
