Kelowna Hotel Tips: Pet-Friendly Summer Safety

Kelowna Hotel Pet Friendly

If you’re bringing Fido along to one of the many hotels in Kelowna this summer, brush up on some pet-friendly summertime safety tips.

During the dog days of summer, it’s really important to ensure your pet’s safety. As news stories about dogs being left in vehicles during super sunny days are gaining traction on social media, pet safety during the summer has become more important than ever. To make sure your next trip to hotels in Kelowna is enjoyable for both you and your furry buddy, we’ve compiled some of our favourite summer safety tips.

1. Skip the Buzz Cuts

Although it may seem like a good idea to shave your pet’s mane during the hot summer months, resist the urge. Instead remove matted tangles and brush your pet’s hair regularly. Their hair will regulate body temperature, provide circulation, and protect their sensitive skin from sunburn.

2. Be Walk Aware

Walking your pet during the hottest part of the day, typically between 1 and 4 pm, is a bad idea. Not only is it too hot for them, but the pavement is at its hottest and can burn the pads of your little buddy’s feet. If you do choose to walk your pet during the day, choose hiking trails with lots of tree coverage. Bonus points if you can find a spot with a lake or stream for them to cool down in!

3. Cars and Pets Don’t Mix

Travelling to hotels in Kelowna with a pet can come with certain hurdles. However, it’s really important to remember that pets should never be left alone in a car. The temperature can soar in a matter of minutes providing a deadly environment for your beloved pup. If possible, leave your dog in your hotel room instead.

4. Know the Signs of Heat Exhaustion

Heat exhaustion can ensure a trip to the vet, regardless of your good intentions. Some things to look for include:

  • Excessive panting
  • Dry or bright red gums
  • Thick drool
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Weak and shaky legs

If you notice your dog having any of these symptoms, move them to a cool place, drape a cool, damp towel over their body, and head to a vet right away. The front desk at your Kelowna hotel can give you the contact information for the nearest vet.

5. Visit a Vet Before Heading to Hotels in Kelowna

Parasites, fleas, and ticks are commonplace during the summer. These nasty pests can contribute to heartworms, hookworms, Lyme disease, and many other dangerous conditions. Visit the vet in your hometown and ask for prevention medication a few weeks before your trip. This will ensure both you and your pet have a great vet-free vacation together.

6. Don’t Assume Your Dog Can Swim

Some dogs aren’t natural born swimmers, and that’s OK. If you introduce them to one of Kelowna’s pet-friendly dog beaches and they don’t immediately run into the water for a refreshing doggy paddle, don’t force them. Just like people, some dogs don’t know how to swim and prefer to just dip their toes in instead.
