Winter Activities for the Whole Family in Kelowna

January 18, 2014

By Natalie Appleton

Kelowna winter activities are almost as endless and exciting as our summer activities. Whether you want to be near the ice or the snow, there’s something for everyone in your family, and you won’t have to go far from Kelowna hotels to enjoy it.

Hockey

Kelowna is home to the Kelowna Rockets, a Western Hockey League (WHL) team that went to the Memorial Cup a record four times. Locals pack Prospera Place, where Rockets place home games against teams from Washington and BC as well as across the Prairies. Their 2013-2014 season so far has seen the team with eight-game winning streaks thanks, in part, to star goalie Jordon Cooke.

Taking in a Kelowna Rockets home game is a great way to keep alive your love for hockey or introduce your children to one of Canada’s favourite sports.

Cross-Country Skiing

This is one of the best ways to experience nature and the beauty of the Okanagan backcountry—on a pair of cross-country skis. The valley is home to hundreds of kilometres of groomed, serene wooded trails, a handful of which can be found near Highway 33, easily accessible from your centrally located Kelowna hotels. Several ski resorts offer alpine trails as well as downhill trails. There are also a handful of dedicated Nordic skiing destinations.

Here are a few of our best Nordic cross-country ski trails:

Downhill Skiiing, Snowboarding, Tubing, Snowshoeing and Sleigh Rides

With more sun and snow than almost anywhere else in western Canada, the Okanagan is one of the best places to ski and snowboard, not just in BC or Canada, but in the world. The valley is home to four hills, three of which are major resorts that offer several other outdoor winter activities, such as tubing, ice skating, sleigh rides, snowshoeing and more.
