Among the wonderful families, business men and women, and travellers who stay at our Kelowna hotel near the airport, you’ll often find talented artists and engaging speakers participating in events put on by University of British Columbia Okanagan’s Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies (FCCS). From performances to poetry readings to community discussions about fair trade, these upcoming FCCS events give you a chance to think about issues and be inspired while you’re in the valley.
The AlterKnowledge Discussion Series takes place at the UBC-O campus, just a 10-minute drive from our Kelowna hotel near the airport. The purpose of the series is to bring people together to discuss topics that fall under the “alternate” knowledge category. This riveting series will challenge the way you think about and understand community-based history and events, effectively “altering” your current knowledge.
On Jan. 16 at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art, the AlterKnowledge group will be getting together to discuss fair trade products. If you’re curious about fair trade, or just want to have a thought-provoking and intelligent debate with students and other like-minded people, you’ll want to sit in on this event.
Another must-attend FCCS event is the performance series referred to as Theatre26. The program, run by a small group of BFA students gaining valuable work experience, allows the students to learn how to book talented performers, promote performances, and work the sound and lights during a live show. With this great work experience opportunity, students emerge from the program ready to take on the exciting world of performance arts.
With two shows, one running Friday, Jan. 16 and one on Saturday, Jan. 17, It’s going to get worse and worse and worse, my friend is one show you’ll want to catch. Choreography, lighting, and fragmented speech combine to wow and excite the audience, providing a unique experience. This event will be hosted by the Mary Irwin Theatre – Rotary Centre for the Arts, located in the culturally rich downtown Kelowna.
