With all the sunshine, ski hills, mountains and water around us, it might not come as a surprise that Okanagan residents are an active lot. Over the years, the community has developed a handful of amazing races that take some of the Pacific Northwest’s best athletes and beloved spectators through some of our most stunning terrain.

Every year, Kelowna hotels welcome back the participants, family members and volunteers who help make these renowned races happen. Here is a run-down of the top three competitions you’ll want to take in, either at the sidelines or racing toward the finish line.

Three Amazing Races in Kelowna

1. RE/MAX Ski2Sea Race

As the title of this wildly popular race suggests, the Ski2Sea courses solo and group relay participants from the ski hill at Big White Ski Resort all the way to the shores of Okanagan Lake in Kelowna. In between, as groups pass on the baton or singles move on, there’s mountain biking along Highway 33 with awesome lake and city views, and then road cycling through the city toward the water where final canoeing or kayaking leg begins.

Every year, hundreds of serious athletes as well as groups of friends up for a challenge and a thrill descend on Kelowna along with masses of spectators to see the RE/MAX Ski2Sea Race unfold.

2. Annual Pushor Mitchell Apple Triathlon

Known by locals as the Kelowna Apple Triathlon, this event gives youth and adults a chance to bike, swim and sprint in an Olympic distance race amongst some pretty incredible scenery. Triathletes from across Canada attend this triathlon, which has been a starting point for the likes of Olympic gold medal winner Simon Whitfield.

Coursing through the downtown lakefront, the Apple Triathlon also offers a thrilling experience for spectators, who can cheer on athletes along the course or at the heart of the action near the transition area near the dolphins at Waterfront Park.

3. Kelowna Wine Country Half Marathon

In 2013, Kelowna was selected to be a part of a series of destination running races held in the wine regions of North America. The Kelowna Wine Country Half Marathon draws athletes and wine-lovers from across the continent who enjoy the track along lush mountains, sprawling vineyards and our sparkling Okanagan Lake as much as the wine they taste before, during and after the event.

We hope these events have got your heart racing with excitement (pun intended) and we wish all our athletes the best of luck training for next year's competitions!
