Imagine a race above sprawling vineyards, a sparkling lake and lush mountains on a sunny September morning. This is the Kelowna Wine Country Half Marathon, and Kelowna hotels are happy to give racers a place to rest their feet before and after they cross the finish line.
What It Is
For all its pristine terrain and views, Kelowna was chosen to be a part of a series of destination running races held in wine countries across North America. Destination Races selected Kelowna as its first boutique race to be held outside the U.S. because of its stunning lake views, vineyards and sunshine. The Kelowna Wine Country Half Marathon takes place Sept. 7, 2013.
Why You’ll Want to Participate
The inaugural Kelowna Wine Country Half Marathon begins its scenic course at The Vibrant Vine winery, on the East Bench above the city. The course gives runners amazing views of Okanagan Lake as well as plentiful grapes and varietals. If you’re not a half marathon kind of runner but you want to take part in this unique race, you can do it as a two-person relay.
The relay transition area features views, music and even a sip of Riesling courtesy of Tantalus Winery. Heading towards the greenbelt and finishing in downtown’s Waterfront Park, racers can cross the finish line and take part in the post-race wine and music festival.
How to Register
Log on to the Destination Races site so you can register online. Registration fees range from $75-190.
