The whole ‘shop local, shop smart’ idea makes sense when you’re at home. What about when you’re on holiday? Even more so! As one of the leading green Kelowna hotels, we want to introduce you to a fun way to enjoy sales and spend your shopping dollar wisely at Small Shop Saturday.

What is Small Shop Saturday?

Small Shop Saturday makes a day of encouraging locals and tourists alike to shop at locally owned stores, from delis and cafes to shoe shops and jewelry retailers. In addition to some great sales on stellar goods, shoppers enjoy feeling good supporting the shop local cause.

Downtown Kelowna has hosted this wildly popular event for a little over 2 years.  The most recent event was held on April 5, with the next one being October 25, 2014.

Why take part in Small Shop Saturday

When you shop local, more money stays in the community, and that money goes to wages, taxes to support local services, community donations, and other local goods and services. It’s also better for the environment because it usually means transportation is minimized and higher quality, longer lasting products are being made, which keeps our landfills clean.

Kelowna is home to an impressive array of artisans, entrepreneurs and restaurateurs that offer a one-of-a-kind heartfelt shopping or dining experience when you’re staying at Kelowna hotels. By supporting the owners of these little shops, you’re supporting all the sweat and passion that went into their work, as well as dozens of other families.

So, it’s good for people, and the economy and the environment. What about you?

Well, on Small Shop Saturday, you get to enjoy:

Big sales everywhere. Almost every local downtown merchant has a sale. From bargain books and shirt sale racks to shoe markdowns and free chocolate samples, Small Shop Saturday promises rewards. Some of our fine home improvement shops hosted ‘Ask an Expert’ sessions so you can ask experts all your burning design questions.

Free parking. Need we say more? Most Kelowna hotels are just a short drive from downtown, so you can enjoy a quick trip plus free parking on the street and in the two downtown parkades. With all those sales, you’ll need a trunk to store bags!

A free fashion show. Discover this season’s latest trends and see what Kelowna’s talented clothier’s are up to  at a free fashion show being held in the Rotary Centre for the Arts (421 CawstonAvenue) at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. More than 20 local retailers participated.

Missed Small Shop Saturday? The next one will be held on October 25, 2014, with a tentative evening event penciled in for June 20. Meanwhile, don't let that stop you from visiting one of the many local businessess downtown. If you’re coming to Kelowna to shop until you drop and you’ll be here for a few days, read our post Tips for Shopping Near Kelowna Hotels.
