It’s that time of year when locals and visitors staying at hotels in Kelowna start looking towards Okanagan Lake and raising the courage to dip their toes in the slightly chilly waters. A few hardy souls can be seen as early as April, clad in thick wetsuits as they’re towed behind impressive wakeboard boats. For them, the goose bumps are worth it because they love having the lake to themselves.
Towards the end of May, the boat traffic will start to pick up as more recreational watersports fans strap on their boards or frolic on the wakes in inflatable tubes. There’s no doubt it can be a lot of fun, but some folks prefer to take a more leisurely approach to getting out on the water. Others prefer to do it under their own power.
If you fall in either of these categories, here are some exciting alternatives to power boating on Okanagan Lake:
Give yourself an upper-body workout while you navigate the endless bays, hidden beaches and other lakeshore treasures you’ll struggle to reach with a motorboat. With no engine noise, you can hear the relaxing sound of waves rippling against your streamlined kayak as you glide through the water on your exploration.
Head down to Waterfront Park (1200 Water Street), right in the heart of the city, where you can easily rent a paddleboat to putt around the city lakeshore. You won’t get anywhere in a hurry, but that’s the point of a paddleboat—it’s for slowing down the pace of life to truly enjoy your time on the water.
One of the newest crazes to hit the Okanagan is standup paddleboarding (SUP). These versatile contraptions are basically ultra-buoyant versions of surfboards that allow you to paddle while standing up. It might take a few attempts to get your balance, but once you do, you’ll be cruising up and down the lakeshore or simply using it as your own personal sunbathing platform. Some fitness fanatics have been known to host SUP yoga classes out on the water!
For the ultimate in leisurely boating options for Okanagan Lake, book a sailboat excursion with Go With the Wind Cruises. With convenient departures from downtown Kelowna, you can head out on a sightseeing adventure where you’ll experience views of:
For those who prefer a more hands-on approach to sailing, the Central Okanagan Sailing Association (COSA) offers sailboat rentals and private lessons.
