When it comes to outdoor winter activities in the Okanagan, downhill skiing is a major draw for visitors in the region. And why wouldn’t it be? We’re spoiled for choice in the valley. However, downhill’s lesser-known cousin, Nordic skiing, is popular for guests staying at Kelowna pet friendly hotels.

For those wanting a full-body aerobic workout and access to vast trail networks featuring spectacular scenery, Nordic (aka cross-country skiing) is a great option. It’s a family-friendly sport with options for all ages, and dogs are welcome at most Nordic centres too.

Best of all, there are numerous cross-country clubs around the valley. Here are some of our favourites:

Kelowna Nordic Ski Club

Located just 20 minutes east of Kelowna along Highway 33, Kelowna Nordic features 75km of majestic wooded trails and a cozy clubhouse that was built in 1977.

By contrast, Kelowna Nordic’s grooming system is state-of-the-art, providing well-defined tracks for an enjoyable outing.

If cross-country isn’t your thing, there’s another 75km of dedicated snowshoe trails. And make sure to bring Fido with you when you visit the area’s Kelowna pet friendly hotels because dogs are welcome on the entire snowshoe trail network, plus 21km of the cross-country trails.

Other features at Kelowna Nordic include:

  • A trio of trailside cabins, all with woodstoves and toilets
  • Free lessons for new club members
  • Host programme to help out-of-town visitors become familiar with trails
  • Toboggan hill

Telemark Cross-Country Ski Club

With 2,500 acres of terrain, Telemark, named after the famous Norwegian ski valley, is a cross-country paradise in West Kelowna. It’s less than a 40-minute drive from most Kelowna hotels.

You can use the modern, spacious chalet gear up for your outing, and enjoy a hot chocolate once you’re finished skiing the 50km of groomed trails. The club also boasts:

  • 4.3km of lit trails
  • 62km of snowshoe trails
  • Biathlon range
  • Classic, skate and snowshoe rentals and lessons
  • Off-season hiking, biking and horseback riding

Sovereign Lake Nordic Club

Renowned for its world-class terrain and snow conditions, Sovereign Lake is located in Silver Star Provincial Park, on the way to Silver Star Mountain Resort in Vernon. Given its high elevation, Sovereign boasts terrific early-season conditions, making it worth a visit for those staying at Kelowna hotels.

By combining their trail network with neighbouring Silver Star, Sovereign offers access to more than 105km of groomed trails, making it the largest continuously groomed network in Canada!

Sovereign gained worldwide exposure as the host of a 2005 FIS Cross-Country World Cup event. In 2011, they hosted the Sparkling Hill Masters World Cup, which was attended by more than 1,100 athletes from 23 countries.

Further Afield

For Nordic enthusiasts who are willing to travel a little bit further, there is also Larch Hills towards Salmon Arm, and the Nickel Plate Nordic Centre, which is 38km west of Penticton.
