In the Okanagan, fresh delicious fruit is right at your fingertips all summer long. As staff at Kelowna hotels will tell you, farm markets are a great way to see orchards and find the valley’s best fruit, but if you really want a taste of the Okanagan, spend an afternoon at a u-pick farm.
Here is our guide to getting the most out of your u-pick experience:
Cherries: July 10 – August 10
Peaches: July 25 – September 1
Prunes/plums: August 15 – September 10
Apricots: July 20 – August 10
Pears: August 15 – September 30
Apples: August 15 – October 30
Finding U-Pick Farms
U-pick farms abound in the Okanagan. Since this is orchard country, when you’re staying at Kelowna hotels, you won’t have to drive far to find the farm and the fruit you’re after.
U-Pick Tips and Etiquette
- 1. Dress for duty. It gets hot in the Okanagan in the summer, especially if you’re out under the sun. Wear sunscreen, a hat, loose clothing, as well as close-toed shoes. You might also want to bring a misting bottle to help cool down as well as water bottles for drinking.
- 2. Pick right. There’s an art to picking, and you can ask your host for tips, but depending on the type of fruit, you’ll want to make sure you’re only picking what’s ripe and plump so the rest can be left on the vine or tree to grow. Also, avoid those white slips planted around the field to catch insects.
- 3. Abide picking etiquette. Show respect for the farm by staying on trails, sampling little and paying for everything you pick.
