Whether you’re backpacking across Canada or you’re an eco-conscious traveler, bicycling in Kelowna is a great way to get around and enjoy the city from almost all of the hotels in Kelowna.
More and more locals are choosing to travel Kelowna by bike, in part because for a city its size, Kelowna has the most extensive bicycle network in Canada, with more than 240 kilometres of trails. Bring along your dog too while staying at pet-friendly hotels in Kelowna, explore the city, and take in some fantastic paths with these tips for biking in Kelowna.
Tips for bicycling in Kelowna:
- Navigate with Google. In 2010, Kelowna became one of six Canadian cities to go live with Google Bike Routes. The site allows you to easily access maps and directions to your destination just like Google maps. Most Kelowna hotels offer computers and Internet access so you can easily route your day trip with Google Bike Routes.
- Use an old-fashioned but reliable Kelowna bike map. The City of Kelowna offers a detailed bicycle route map marked by neighbourhoods and coloured paths indicating shared, paved and off-road trails. It also highlights bike repair shops just in case and major attractions you’ll probably want to take in along the way. If you’re visiting Kelowna, you’ll save on data and roaming on your mobile phone when you print off one of these handy maps.
- Take in the Mission Greenway/Gallagher’s Canyon. Many of the Kelowna hotels along Highway 97 aren’t far from the entrance at Mission Creek Park on Dilworth Drive and LeckieRoad. This trail is popular because it’s great for novices and families and it feels a little like you’re in the mountains even though the mall is just a few blocks away. Along your way to the Myra Canyon walls, you’ll see unique geological formations, old trees and breathtaking views of Layercake Mountain. Give yourself about two tours to make this peaceful urban bike trek.
- Try the Rails with Trails system. You can bike next to trains and make your way to sightseeing attractions, shopping and restaurants using the Rails with Trails off-road pathway. This scenic, multi-use and paved pathway runs within and adjacent to the CN rail corridor so locals and tourists alike can reach their destinations safely on bikes or in-line skates.
