There’s really no such thing as a bad time of year to visit the Okanagan. Year-round, Kelowna hotels are brimming with tourists who come for the sun, the snow, the golf, the wine, and the list goes on. But in the spring, a shoulder season, you’re apt to enjoy some pretty amazing festivals and everything the valley has to offer without standing in line.
1. The Spring Okanagan Wine Festival
If you like wine even a little, if you’ve ever been enamoured by Okanagan lake views, if you love eating gourmet meals whilst drinking wine above a beautiful Okanagan lake sunset, you need to take in the 20th annual Spring Okanagan Wine Festival.
More than 100 events—including tastings, wine & dines, soirees, and seminars—are staged at wineries across the valley over the first 11 days in May. In addition to award-winning wine, you’ll have the chance to soak in master chef food pairings, stunning views and hopefully some of that sun. Celebrate the arrival of spring and the waking vines with our BC winemakers.
2. Skiing and Snowboarding
You’ll find some of the best skiing in BC right here in the Okanagan, and a lot of it is still going on well into April.
Big White Ski Resort, home to 118 trails spread out over 905 acres, is set to stay open until April 13 this season. Just 60 kilometres away from most Kelowna hotels, Big White is easy to get to this time of year, and you’ll enjoy great powder as well as warm temperatures once you get there. It’s usually about 0°C in April, and the month sees an average of 40 centimetres of snow.
Silver Star Mountain resort near Vernon also offers great snowpack and trails until mid-April.
Yes, it’s true. Here, you can ski in the morning, and then play an 18-hole round of golf in the afternoon in April. Many Kelowna golf courses are said to have wintered exceptionally well with some opening as early as mid-March. With nearly 20 courses to choose from, including several championship courses all within a short drive from Kelowna hotels, pack your clubs for a spring golf trip.
4. The Farmers’ Market
Fresh-picked asparagus, fresh-baked bread, hand-made organic soap, gluten-free muffins... they’re all yours to enjoy under the sun as the renowned Kelowna Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market outdoor season starts April 2. Be sure to bring a bag and stock up on Okanagan delights at the outdoor market, held every Wednesday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the corner of Dilworth and Springfield near the Orchard Park Mall.
