Electric Vehicles Charging Stations: A Kelowna Hotel’s Green Mission

August 13, 2013

The latest amenity travelers are looking for when they’re researching Kelowna hotels isn’t for guests and it isn’t even found under the hotel’s roof. It’s in the parking lot.

Electric vehicle charging stations allow guests to check in and then plug so their cars are ready to go in less than two hours.

The BEST WESTERN PLUS Kelowna Hotel & Suites, an award-winning ‘green hotel,’ installed its first electric vehicle charging station in the summer of 2012.

“We thought they might take longer to catch on,” says Brenda Rayburn, Director of Sales and Marketing.” But it didn’t take long at all.

The Kelowna hotel’s first 90 V charging station, complementary to all guests, saw regular use every week, as did the second station, installed a few months later.

“We’re pleasantly surprised at the usage they’re getting, and we just installed our third charging station,” says Rayburn, of the newest EV charging station installed in June 2013.

Traveling in BC with an electric car is getting easier since there are more and more electric vehicle owners in the province every year. BC Hydro predicts that by 2022, we’ll have 100,000 electric vehicles on the road.

The EV charging station at the Kelowna Best Western takes between 20 minutes and two hours to give a vehicle enough energy to hit the road again.

If you’re driving an electric vehicle in BC on your summer roadtrip, plot your next stop using the British Columbia Automotive Association’s handy online EV charging station locator. In BC, Tim Horton’s also offers EV charging stations at select locations in the Lower Mainland.

In Kelowna, the Best Western was the first business in the city to install an EV charging station as part of the hotel’s sustainability initiatives.

If you’re into ‘traveling green’, you’ll feel good about staying at the Best Western. From its solar hybrid water system to its new environmental wing, this hotel strives to reduce its carbon footprint every day.
